Four long nights

Every night is an aurora night, if the sky behaves.

Iceland in December gets about 20 hours of darkness. Clear skies plus a little solar activity and the whole sky moves. Check the forecast every evening.

Day by day

The plan

Mid-December daylight runs from about 11:15 to 15:30, so the days are slow and the nights do the work.

Locals

Fluffier than us. Just.

Icelandic horses grow thick winter coats and stand about in the snow looking unbothered. Expect to stop for them at least once.

Fifty things, ten at a time

Things you didn't know about Iceland

  1. Beer was banned until 1989.Prohibition began in 1915. Wine came back in 1922 and spirits in 1935, but strong beer stayed illegal until 1 March 1989, now celebrated as Beer Day.
  2. There are no mosquitoes. Not one. Scientists think the freeze–thaw cycle never lets them finish growing up.
  3. No army. The only NATO member without a standing army. There's a coast guard, and a lot of horses.
  4. The phone book goes by first name.Surnames are mostly patronymics (Björk Guðmundsdóttir is Guðmundur's daughter), so everyone is listed by first name.
  5. There's an app to check you're not related.Everyone's descended from the same few settlers, so you bump phones before a date to check you're not cousins.
  6. Christmas Eve is for books.Jólabókaflóð, the Christmas Book Flood: books are the gift, then everyone goes to bed to read them with chocolate.
  7. A giant cat eats people at Christmas.Jólakötturinn, the Yule Cat, eats anyone who didn't get new clothes for Christmas. Pack something new.
  8. The country grows about 2 cm a year.It sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where North America and Europe are pulling apart. You can walk between them at Þingvellir.
  9. The hot water smells of eggs.It comes straight out of the ground, geothermally heated, with a whiff of sulphur. The cold tap is glacier water and tastes perfect.
  10. Horses that leave can never come back.To keep the breed disease-free, an Icelandic horse that leaves the country can't return. Even for a visit.

Next time

For our next holiday together in Iceland

Three places that didn't fit into four short December days. They're all a long way from Reykjavík, and with barely four hours of daylight we'd have spent the trip driving in the dark.

Summer · 2 to 3 hours awaySnæfellsnes road trip

Kirkjufell, black-sand beaches and a glacier on a volcano. Needs a long summer day, or a night out west.

Summer · 5 hours awayDiamond Beach

Icebergs washed up on black sand at Jökulsárlón. Too far for a day trip; best with a night or two on the south coast.

Winter only · 5 hours awayBlue ice caves

Inside Vatnajökull, open roughly November to March. Next winter, with a couple of nights near the glacier.

Megan's turn · multiple choice

The first two days are sorted. The rest is yours.

Tuesday and Wednesday are at the Retreat, all sorted. Thursday and Friday in and around Reykjavík are up for grabs: tap one card in each round (open "Details" for the how, when and how much), then send the answers to Dave.

Round 3 · Friday · sorted

Ski-doo Friday is booked

Megan picked option A: Into the Glacier from Húsafell, Friday 18 December at 10:00. A glacier truck up Langjökull, snowmobiling across the ice (one sled, we take turns driving), then about an hour inside a tunnel carved into the glacier.

✓ Booked by Megan on 18 October · paid in full
Thank you, Megan, for organising Friday. You found it, you booked it, you paid for it. All Dave has to do is drive halfway and not fall off.

Friday morning

Driving to Húsafell

About two hours each way, mostly in the dark on the way out. Tap the route and Google Maps plans it from ION City.

Booked · Into the Glacier, 10:00

To Húsafell

About 130 km · 2 hours in winter · Open the route

  1. Leave ION City at 07:30. It is dark until about 11:00, so we watch the sun come up over the glacier.
  2. Road 1 north out of the city through Mosfellsbær. Supercharger at Háholt 11 if the car isn't at 100%.
  3. Hvalfjörður tunnel: 5.8 km under the fjord, free.
  4. Just after Borgarnes, follow signs for Road 50 to Reykholt, then Road 518 to Húsafell.
  5. Ignore Road 550 (Kaldidalur) if the sat-nav suggests it: it's closed in winter.
  6. Park at Húsafell centre, reception beside Hotel Húsafell, 15 minutes early. The glacier truck goes from there.
  7. Home the same way. Top up at Mosfellsbær.
  • Night before and that morning: check road conditions on umferdin.is and the weather on vedur.is. If a road is closed, the tours refund.
  • Speed: 90 km/h on open roads, 50 in towns. Cameras are common.
  • Headlights on at all times, by law.
  • Never stop on the road for photos or the aurora: use a proper lay-by.
  • Charging: charge to 100% the night before and warm the car from the app before setting off; the cold eats range.

    Winter, properly

Frozen waterfalls, black sand, snow on everything.

The far-flung south coast is saved for the summer trip, but December Iceland looks like this even from the roadside.

    Pack · three bags each

    What goes in the bags

Each of us has a small cabin bag, a large cabin bag and a hold bag. Row 1 has no seat in front, so both cabin bags go in the overhead locker. Tick things off as they go in; ticks are saved on each phone.

    🩱 Swim and spa

🧳 Hold bag. Coming home, wet swimwear goes in the wet bag.

    👗 Megan's wardrobe

🧳 Large cabin bag (56×45×25): dinner clothes, jumpers, trousers, underwear and nightwear for 5 days. Thin layers beat one huge jumper: hot car, cold glacier, sweltering restaurants.

    👔 Dave's wardrobe

🧳 Large cabin bag (56×45×25), with the smart boots. Layers, not one huge jumper.

    🥾 Shoes

✈️ Wear the heavy boots on the plane: heaviest item, zero bag space.

    🏔️ Glacier and outdoors

✈️ Wear the coat and thickest jumper on the plane. Thermals, waterproofs, gloves and hats go in the hold bag.

    🧴 Wash bag and health

🧳 Liquids bag and meds in the small cabin bag; big bottles in the hold.

    🔌 Tech and the car

🧳 Small cabin bag (45×36×20): phones, chargers, headphones.

    📷 Cameras

🧳 Cabin bags only: never put cameras or batteries in the hold.

    📱 Apps

📲 On both phones before we leave, signed in and tested.

    🛂 Documents and money

🧳 Small cabin bag: passports, licences, wallet, snacks for the drive. Coming home, fill the empty space with snacks and wool.
